Mark "the Bird" Fidrych died as the result of an accident on his Massachusetts farm. He was only 54 years old. He found fame as a pitcher for the Detroit Tigers, but had his career cut short due to injuries. The Associated Press has a good story about him

I was sad to read about that. I guess old farts like us are the only ones who care. He was entertaining on the mound.
ReplyDeleteOn one of the sites carrying the news, I watched an interview he did in 1985--he sure seemed down-to-earth and very, very 'real.' And to think, the surgery that could have extended his career came into being only a couple of years after he retired.
