Interesting Things Seen On Our Travels

Part of our time out-of-town last week was spent shopping.  While I do my best to shop locally, I HAVE to go out-of-town to get certain things.  For example, our fabric stores--of which we have one (2?) and Wal Mart (what a joke)--lack anything that I would want or need for most sewing projects.  So, I need to shop whenever we do our road trips.  K, also, needs to shop away from home, at times, and this is where this post comes from.

K is required to wear steel-toed boots at work.  While they aren't hard to find, K has a hard time finding anything comfortable, so he continues to get the one brand that he KNOWS will fit fine.  It has been easiest for him to get his boots whenever we go to Wisconsin, partly because he works for a Wisconsin company and gets a discount at the store he buys from.  This past weekend found us at the strip mall where the shoe store is located.  Because I had no particular reason to go into the store, K went by himself and I stayed in the Envoy and people-watched.   As I was looking around, I noticed the signage for some of the stores:

You can see there is a Sally Beauty Supply and a Fantastic Sams and a  Game Stop, along with a cash store.  The sign that caught my eye, though, was the blue one, so I needed a closer look:

And there, right in the middle of a strip mall is a place called Any Lab Test Now!  Really?!?!  It just blew me away.  Does ANYONE need lab work done NOW! and without a doctor's order?  WHY would you need this?  Maybe I'm just old-fashioned and think a doctor should be the one to order lab tests, but what do I know?  I guess there might be 'emergency situations' where you need lab tests RIGHT NOW!  Might help in determining your kid's Baby Daddy before the wedding, I suppose.

I guess people don't want to wait in a hospital waiting area for their tests. I love a local testing lab because I can go in any time I want to get my blood test. No setting the alarm to get up in time.

I noticed a store at a strip mall where you can get prenatal ultrasounds of your baby-I wonder if you need a doctor's order for this or if you can just walk in and have them scan your belly. I never liked the idea of that-I think that ultrasounds aren't 100% harmless to babies in the womb.

  2. This is the first time I have ever seen anything like this. When I need labs done, my dr's office does them right there--and I go in whenever I want. Actually, if I had to use the hospital lab, I STILL could go in anytime during business hours, so I don't think one of these places would work here. I guess I just don't feel the need to go and have lab tests done unless my doctor orders them--and in this particular place, NO doctor's order is needed. BUT, I do see the logic of one of these places in the scenario that you are talking.

I've never seen the ultrasound places. I agree that ultrasounds are done much too often--I really don't think ALL of the possible side-effects are known.

Every so often, we will have an ad in the paper for full-body scans or all-inclusive testing that is done outside of the hospital/dr's office setting. I guess what would scare me most about this--other than over-testing--is the reason 'House' doesn't like full-body scans: You can find something 'wrong' EVERY time you do one of these things. BUT, that doesn't mean that the 'wrong' thing is something that necessarily needs fixing or is life-threatening. The time until seeing a doctor to go over the results and determine the possibility of a REAL health problem would be horribly stress filled!

I have NO IDEA, CMK. Seems a little crazy to me!

  4. Yeah, it just struck me as odd and a bit chuckle-worthy. ;)

  5. ...baby daddy before the wedding... Hilarious.
If you watch Maury you know the wedding never happens anyway, much less NOW!

    Sadly, so true.

Yeah, I've seen those ads for full-body scans, too. Wonder how much they cost, since I doubt insurance would pay for that. I guess the people who would want these tests are people who are convinced something's wrong with them and their doctor won't order a test, whether because the doctor doesn't believe the patient or insurance or HMO wouldn't like it. I've read that insurers frown on doctors who order "too many" tests. I'd like to know if one of those people has ever marched in their doctor's office triumphantly waving the test results they got from one of those scan places?

  8. The full-body scans that I've seen advertised are in the several hundred dollar range--and if I'm not mistaken, the FULL full scan is around $500 (at least.) NOT something the insurance companies want to pay for--and rightly so! Too many tests seem to be ordered these days as it is--doctor DO have to cover their own asses for fear of being sued. Hopefully the full-body scan won't become one more of those routine things.

However, I think it would be cool to have the scan photos-I'd put it on my wall. Imagine having a head-to-toe photo of what your insides look like! I always wanted to know, that's why I asked for (and got) copies of my endoscopy because I wanted to see what the inside of my stomach looked like. Call me weird, but I'm curious!

  10. K and I both got COLOR pictures of our colonoscopies. I keep telling The Oldest that I'm making a framed collection for her to put up in her bathroom. (She is absolutely HORRIFIED that we didn't throw the pics out immediately.) :D

It makes a change from the boring photos of family & the dog!

  14. I thought the colonoscopy pics would be appropriate for the bathroom... :D

Nah, I have an Uncle John's Bathroom Reader if I want to look at something besides the wall! (those Bathroom Reader books are great-trivia, and I learned things I didn't know!)

  16. While I have given a couple of the Bathroom Readers as gifts, I don't have one myself. The NOOK works very well in the bathroom, though. ;)

Being In a Funk

I'm still having a bit of a funk going on in my life. To be expected, I guess. But, it REALLY is affecting me to see my best friend ...
