Several years ago, shortly after the university began fall classes, I was making dinner when the phone rang.
Me: Hello.
Caller: Hi. Is Mary there?
Me: I'm sorry, there is no one here by that name. You must have the wrong number.
Caller: (pause) (sigh) Oh. (pause)
Caller (in a much happier voice): What are YOU doing tonight?
Me: Um...making dinner, cleaning up the kitchen, and getting my daughters off to bed.
Caller (very sadly): Oh. Good by.

What the heck? Some stranger just asked you what you were doing like they wanted to get together? That's freaking weird!
ReplyDeleteThis is my thinking on what happened: the caller was a new student who got a wrong number and he thought I sounded young enough to be another student. I just can't--after all these years--forget how very sad he sounded when I said he had a wrong number. Poor kid--I hope he got his date with Mary. ;)
