Updating

The FedEx site stills says that the new desktop will be here on Tuesday, but we'll see. I got the laptop on Saturday and have been noodling around a little, but there isn't all that much to do without being connected to the Gore. I want to wait and set up my network all at once, so I will wait till the desktop is up and running.

This migration has been a regular pain in the ass. This is partly due to the fact that I haven't backed up my data on a regular basis, but it is much, much more than that. I'm finding that the 'back up' app on this machine only goes so far and doesn't back up nearly enough of my data. So, that has meant a lot of searching, copying, pasting, etc, etc. I always worry that something will be forgotten and that I will lose it forever. (I plan on reformatting the hard drive on this ancient machine when I take all of the data I need off of it.) And it seems as if I am facing a deadline with this machine--it just isn't working right and is quickly going downhill. I think a lot of problems will be solved after the reformat, but time will tell. I'm STILL not sure what we're doing with this computer, but I'm sure K has something in mind. I will be sending The Youngest my old laptop--it is good enough for her to surf and do email. And they know enough people to help them upgrade, if that is the direction they want to go.

So, I will continue to be MIA for a few days. Other than reading as much of my mail as I can, I don't know when I will be back on here. Thank goodness for my phone--it keeps me connected. I just may double--if not triple-- my data usage in the next few.

One problem I didn't anticipate when I got this computer was that stuff I transferred from the old one couldn't be read on this one, even though the stuff I'd transferred was written on Word Pad, Notepad, etc. which should be compatible since the machines were both Windows. It was extremely frustrating, and I never did find a solution. Hope that doesn't happen to you!

  3. meleah: Right now my problem with the migrating is that I'm still not sure where to find the file system--and I HAVE to transfer files from one to the other and I do this manually. (I LOVE the 'hands-on' approach that I learned with PCs.) I LOVE looking around the innards of my computer system--one of the reasons I DON'T like Apples--and I still haven't found a way to get in. I KNOW it's still there, I just have to look harder. I KNEW the new OS was going to be a bit of a challenge, but I've been through so many that I don't think it will take me long before I'm up to speed.

I'm LOVING the laptop--it is gorgeous! It's funny, cause it is BOTH smaller AND bigger than the last one. It has a smaller footprint, but the screen actually SEEMS larger. I haven't been able to really put it through its paces, as I'm not online with it. In a week or so, I should know just how much I'm loving this.

janet: That is my worry right now. This machine/OS is a 32-bit and the new OS is 64-bit. I don't know whether or not that is going to be a problem--I'm just not THAT geeky. I DO know that there are problems when someone migrates from a system that has Windows Works on it to one that has Windows Office--I had THAT problem with another one of my computers. Microsoft usually has a solution for that--a free program that will translate one document into another so that the new system can read it. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that things will only be labor-intensive and NOT geeky-type problems.

  5. YES! It is here and unpacked. I am finishing up on this old relic and then will get started with the installs. AFTER the game--which is going on right now--I will spend the rest of the night (vampire, anyone? :D) getting things taken care of. I'm hoping to be online and have a lot of the programs on the new computer by tomorrow PM. Keep fingers crossed!

I'll have to check out Microsoft and see if I can get something to read my old files. Thanks for the tip!
