Baby, It's COLD Outside

Yes, it is beginning to sound like a broken record, but we are STILL cold here. The high today is not supposed to go above zero. So, I figured it would be a good time to break out some cold-weather/winter, UP trivia. Enjoy!

--The latest, plowable snowfall in the UP was June 1945. They had to haul out the snowplows to do the roads.

--On June 22, 1992, a temp of 32 degrees was reported at our local weather station. This is the latest freezing temperature for our area ever recorded.

--August 18, 1968 was the earliest we have had a temp of 32 degrees.

--September 13, 1975, found snow falling in places in the UP. This was the earliest recorded snowfall for the winter season.

--3" to 6.5" of snow fell around the UP on September 22, 1995.

--The coldest November temperature was -13 on November 30, 1976.

--The greatest one-day snowfall on record occurred in Marquette on December 12, 1961. 14.2" fell from just before midnight on the 11th to about noon on the 12th.

--December 20, 1983 had the coldest December temp on record: -28 degrees.

--On occasions, Lake Superior has kept its ice into June (1972) and July (1876).

--The most snow that has fallen in one winter is in the northern part of the UP, a place called Delaware. During the winter of 1978-1979, 391.9" of snow fell. (Delaware averages 231.5" per year.)

--The greatest depth of snow on the ground was 80" at the Marquette Airport on February 16, 1971.

--And even though it has never been made official, snow HAS fallen on July 4th here in the UP. It has happened once that I remember.
