Thanks To mental_floss

Today on mental_floss, they have Tuesday Turnip. The author types in a random term or phrase into Google search and then blogs the results. Today's Turnip is 'six out of every ten.' Here are the results:

(Everything in quotes is lifted from the mental_floss blog.)

"In the US, six out of every ten couples buy a diamond ring for their engagement.

Six out of every ten Americans are overweight.

Six out of every ten apples you eat are grown in Washington

Six out of every ten new jobs are computer-related.

Nearly six out of every ten Protestant churches now have a website. That is up from just one-third of all Protestant churches in 2000, an increase of 68%.

Six out of every ten commonly-used English words are derived, directly or indirectly, from Latin.

About six out of every ten US smokers started smoking before age 14. Nine of every ten smokers became addicted before reaching age 19.

Six out of every ten children killed in crashes are unbelted.

Six out of every ten Americans live in areas that violate federal air quality standards.

Only six out of every ten… children will graduate from high school in New York – the third highest dropout rate in America.

And my personal fav, only ’cause it’s so darn controversial (drum roll…): According to a survey conducted by Barna, about six out of every ten adults (59%) favor teaching creationism while less than four out of ten (38%) do not want it added to the public school curriculum content."

Now, MY question is this: If the majority of people feel as if Creationism should be taught in schools, what is the problem? While it is part of this great nation to not trample on people's rights--theoretically?--when did it become the right of the minority to dictate what is going on? Just a great controversy to ponder on 'hump day.' You're welcome! :)

I feel that intelligent design isn't fact. All of the facts and statistics you placed up there have some kind of evidence or backup to what you say. However, I feel intelligent design only steps on the beliefs and learning abilites of others. If your religious, then go to church or temple or sunday school. But don't force me to listen to your Sunday morning routine because you feel it is right. All the power to you and what you believe.

  2. I guess my point with Creationism is this: if the majority of the people want it, why can't it be taught along with evolution? I feel there is just as much validity behind Creationism or intelligent design or whatever they call it, as there is for evolution. Granted, there is scientific evidence around for evolution, but there is just as much faith needed to believe evolution as there is to believe Creationism. (And there are scientists who have their proof for intelligent design, also.) The big difference between the two groups: people who believe in Creationism know and believe they have faith, those who believe in evolution won't admit they use faith to believe what they do.

The Constitution and Bill of Rights were created specifically to protect the rights of the minority. The majority's rights don't need protecting-there are enough people representing that view. How would you feel if it was the other way around? How would you feel if people wanted to teach the Hindu or Pagan creationin story to your 7-year old AS SCIENCE? I wouldn't like it at all...Teach my kid what science supports in the science room and what different cultures believe in a social studies class! If evidence is found to support Creationism AS STRONGLY as it supports evolution, teach that. Science classes should teach science, supported by evidence. Protect the minorities that don't agree with you, becuase some day you'll be in the minority, and you'll want protecting.

Being In a Funk

I'm still having a bit of a funk going on in my life. To be expected, I guess. But, it REALLY is affecting me to see my best friend ...
